Renter’s Insurance for Your Apartment

Warning! Your landlord’s insurance does not cover your personal possessions.

If you want your stuff covered, then you’ll need renter’s insurance. It’s just like homeowner’s insurance, except for your apartment. It protects most of what you own: TV, stereo, clothes, appliances, etc. Generally, it protects against fire, theft, vandalism and water damage, but not against flood damage and earthquake damage. If you have special equipment, like cameras, computers or guns, you might need extra coverage – so read carefully.

Renter’s insurance also pays for part of your expenses in the event that your apartment is unusable, in addition to personal liability claims and suits for bodily injury (like if someone trips over your coffee table).

Renter’s insurance is pretty inexpensive, depending what kind of coverage you get and what deductible you choose (ie, how much you pay before insurance kicks in). You might want to first check with your parents’ homeowners’ insurance or your car insurance provider to get a package deal.

When you sign up for your renter’s insurance policy, make sure to document all of your major possessions (and list their serial numbers). You might also want to take photos or video and store them offsite. This will come in handy if you have to put in a claim.

There is a lot to know about renter’s insurance, so before you make any major decisions, you should talk to a professional.
