Located on SW 20th Avenue, The Courtyards offers spacious units and is a short walk to both Tan-Cha and HOWL.

Matcha is kind of like pineapple on pizza. Either you love it or you hate it. Some people swear by its earthy, creamy goodness while others can't fathom why anyone would willingly drink something that kind of tastes like grass. If you're not a fan of matcha, it might be because you've never had it prepared the right way. For University of Florida students and matcha lovers, I've tracked down the best spots near your Gainesville Apartment that might just change your mind – or make you love it even more.

Curia on the Drag

There is some great matcha walking distance from the University of Florida

Curia is a go-to spot for students looking to get away from campus for a treat. Less than a 10-minute drive from UF, it has a fun, cozy vibe with some unique decor. The strawberry matcha is absolutely to die for. Order it without extra sweetener as in my opinion, the strawberry syrup is sweet enough. Once you grab your matcha, you can take a seat and get some studying done in their main room. If it's full, there is an overflow room that's like an art gallery with seats. Plus, if you get hungry between sips, Curia sells a variety of pastries and there's a vegan food truck nearby. Next to the thrift store is The AUK Market, a locally owned thrift store selling vintage and locally made gifts.

Tan-Cha

If you love a sweet, creamy matcha and are a boba lover like myself, you have to check out Tan-Cha. It is a specialty boba and tea shop situated right on University walking distance from the University of Florida. The matcha at Tan-Cha is imported from Japan and made with a specialty sweetened condensed milk-based creamer. Plus it is the only matcha on this list that allows for toppings like boba or traditional red bean. This is a top pick for students living in a Midtown apartment.

House of Waking Life - HOWL

The House of Waking Life (HOWL) is a unique community center in the heart of downtown Gainesville. It blends creative exploration, wellness and a sense of sanctuary. The building that houses HOWL is 111 years old and hosts events including yoga, art classes, live music, workshops and meditation sessions. Its beverage cafe and show overlooks an open garden, meditation labyrinth and an outdoor stage for performances. Its matcha has an earthy, authentic taste and is certainly one of the most unique sip spots in Gainesville.

Cymplify

Located off NW 8th Avenue, CYM Coffee Co. is a beloved Gainesville spot, serving up some of the best coffee, tea, and pastries around. With its relaxed and cozy vibe, it truly captures the essence of a neighborhood coffee house. While matcha may not always be on the menu, when it makes a rare appearance, it's worth the wait. Their rose and honey syrup addition transforms the earthy matcha into a delicately floral and lightly sweet treat. Whether you're there to plug in and work or unplug with friends in a cozy setting, Cymplify has something for everyone.
