While Gainesville isn’t a small town, a lot of places that you’ll need to go when renting is centralized to one main area. Having a car is convenient, but you can survive without one. If you’re on campus, scooters are by far the easiest way to get around. There is more parking available than for normal-sized vehicles and you’ll easily be able to maneuver around faster than in cars. You’ll still have to buy a campus parking decal, but they’ll be much cheaper.
